"The characters are easily likeable, though shallowly introduced thus far as they are, but there’s certainly promise in the premise of Angelic Runes and a lot of different directions it could be taken."

I liked this fantasy tale about angels, demons, and forgotten magic. Sowil is a brave and kind hearted hero in search of answers about his past. Allueh and Erudite are deceptively cute kids, who constantly say creepy things. All three of them have been shunned for being different, and they quickly form a bond through their similar experiences. After saving the twins from being buried alive, Sowil discovers that they speak for angels and demons. Like him, they possess an ancient magic, and he longs to discover why they all have these strange abilities.

As I said the cover would have put me off, and even now I find myself cringing a bit, a shocking pink it almost hurts the eyes to look at it. However, the old saying “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” is so true with this volume. Tateno’s art in this volumes is decidedly Yaoi at times, but I found I loved everything about the art. The settings and scenery have been well extremely well drawn, and the character designs are simply amazing.

When I first looked at this fantasy manga, I thought, “oh, not for me”, because I don’t much like magical quest stories. But when I opened it up, I found myself continuing to read anyway. He trades some magic seeds for them, only to find out that the girl hears demons and the boy angels. Since they tell other people what they hear, they’re freaking everybody else out.

Sowil is unique in the area he lives in: he is a kind of magician, a valuable profession in a land prone to plague, barrenness, and cursed living in general. At the beginning of the story, Sowil sticks his neck out to save two young girls named Allueh and Erudite who were being buried alive in a small town as a kind of anti-curse measure.

Soon, however, it becomes clear that the real mystery at hand is not these children but rather Sowil himself. Neither the divine nor devilish beings that the twins speak to know anything about him or the potent runic magic he wields so skillfully. It is, in fact, otherworldly. So why was he born into this one? It is a question that many are asking, including the deities to whom the twins speak, Sowil’s handsome mentor Taurus…and Sowil himself.
