With its playful mix of fanservice, battle of the sexes comedy and a just a hint of steamy romance, Maid Sama! has most of the ingredients for an addictive shojo manga treat. It's up to Fujiwara to prove that she can deliver something more substantial than one volume's worth of guilty pleasures.

Emma aside, I generally don’t go for manga about maids. I ended up being pleasantly surprised by Maid Sama thanks to an engaging protagonist.

There’s a lot you have to accept to enjoy this book. Let’s start with the back cover description of Misaki as an “overachieving feminist”. What’s overachieving about working hard to get good grades, make her school better, and help support her family?

While so many manga have weak females, Misaki is tough as nails—she's physically strong, a good student and willing to do anything for her family. It's both refreshing and an interesting contrast to her job as a maid, constantly calling customers "master" and serving them despite her antipathy.

Maid-sama! has so many things working against it that it's a wonder I like it as much as I do. The basic premise of 'feisty school president has to hide her part-time maid cafe job from the world' sounds cliched. And we do get the occasional bit of the guy telling the girl she needs to be more careful and let him protect her, etc. However, for the most part this manga manages to rise above, or at least subvert, some of the cliches.

The plot is inching along, slowly - we see Igarashi hinting that Usui should enjoy his freedom while it lasts. I've seen this sort of plot in a few other manga, notably Ouran High School Host Club and The Magic Touch, so I suspect that he's in some way connected to an obscenely rich family, and will be having that old arranged marriage hanging over his head soon. I could be wrong, though.
