What makes Yotsuba&! so incredibly spectacular is Kiyohiko Azuma’s spot-on ability to remind his readers that even the tiniest common occurrences in life were amazing when they were young. His main character, Yotsuba, is an embodiment of every ounce of wide-eyed wonder that resides in any child who is learning about the world for the first time. It is a sweet, charming reminder that no matter how trite something may be to an adult, a child can still find joy in it.

Yotsuba& is one of the freshest things to hit manga (and certainly comics in general) in years. It's episodic in nature, for the most part, showing little snippets from the life of Yotsuba, our green-haired and pure-of-heart heroine who can teach us, by being something of an alien, something about being human.

The hottest days of summer are the backdrop of Volume 4 of this latest installment of the adventures of Yotsuba, a naïve but well-meaning little girl who has just moved into the neighborhood. Yotsuba&! Volume 4 is full of delightful surprises that left me smiling from cover to cover.

Things start out with the fun Yotsuba's father has with her by changing the rules of the game they are playing so that he always gets the win. I had to laugh because I remember how my Dad did similar things to us when we were young. *lol* Parent's don't lose. Things continue to be fun when Jumbo comes over and the two grownups act like kids over a badminton game.

That would be a very small comparison between the ADV edition of volume 4 and the one that Yen Press just put out. I’m going by what feels right and funnier to me here. I have no idea how accurate either company is with the translation (I know a lot of this can be tricky or involves judgement calls) this is just personal preference.

Yotsuba&! is one of those atmospheric manga, like Aria, that you can read for relaxation. Each chapter is a self-contained story, so you don’t have to work too hard, and the biggest conflict in the book is Yotsuba taking off on her bike and getting grounded. It’s a great choice for escapist reading for kids or kids-at-heart.

The thing I find really impressive is that Azuma takes a rather plain character design, and does it so well it has a totally new feel to it. This is proven in this volume as we have numerous support characters who are exceptionally well drawn.

Almost everything is a new experience for her, and her enthusiasm provides the appeal of the stories. Her wide-eyed innocence and seemingly inexhaustible energy makes for charming misunderstandings and comedy. She can be demanding — she can’t figure out a playground swing, for example, but once shown what it is, she gets on and yells, “Push me!” Often she stands, staring, when she doesn’t understand something, until someone takes pity on her and provides more information. Her naivete provides a new perspective on everyday items and events.

It's not often I'll laugh out reading a book, and still less often where I'll do so in public. I sat there chuckling, smiling, and generally just having my day improved by an order of magnitude.
