To be honest, I wasn’t all that excited about this series. The title is generic, the cover is drab, and the tagline “every text could be your last,” while accurate, put me off quite a bit. But all I had to do was open the book, and I was more or less hooked by the first page, which featured Yukiteru in the middle of a passionate kiss, holding a dart and thinking of stabbing the girl with it, and the girl whispering “You won’t, because it’s not in your future.” How intriguing.

Yukiteru looks normal enough, but even his classmates know that there's something not quite right with this quiet teen. Yukiteru lacks the social skills to interact with his peers, so he spends his time observing and recording events in his cell phone diary. His only friends seem to be imaginary ones -- namely Deus Ex Machina, an omnipotent god who is the "King of Time and Space" and Deus' mini-messenger, Muru Muru.

Future Diary Vol 1 by Sakae Esuno Manga Review

Future Diary kicks into high gear, providing an intriguing premise with plenty of psychological thriller elements. Yuki goes from being in the background, recording the events taking place around him, to being on center stage, running for his life. When Deus Ex Machina, a friend from his imagination, becomes unsettlingly real, Yuki’s passive existence takes a stunning change. Now he can no longer watch what’s going on around him; he has to take part, or he’s going to end up very, very dead.

Future Diary takes a couple of manga themes and mashes them up in an interesting way, combining the Japanese love of cell phones, the survival-game trope, and high school angst to create a clever suspense story. It’s like the Twitter version of Battle Royale.

Future Diary is a survival game thriller. Unlike most movies and books in this genre, Future Diary doesn’t use extreme violence. Instead, this is more of a cat-and-mouse game where each person gets to play both roles. We see the events unfold from Yukiteru’s point of view, which helps add to the tension of the book.

This series grows on me more and more. It's so over the top and schizophrenic that you can't help but love it.

Future Diary (Mirai Nikki) Volume One Review – Sick, Breakneck, Modern Psychological Fun

    Pull Quote:
Sakae Esuno’s Future Diary (or Mirai Nikki as it is known in Japan and still know by most fans) is a psychological thriller that might be one of the best entry points into modern Japenese young adult fiction around. The first volume, which has recently been published in the US by Tokyopop, moves at an insane, whiplash-inducing pace that burns through plot elements, action scenes, character interaction, and emotional development so fast you might not even realize at first that any of it happened. However, whether you have just finished your first blast-through or are turning the pages again for a closer look, there’s no doubt that you’ll find something enticing in the pages of the Future Diary.
