Tokyopop is releasing this classic shonen ai series in larger editions. This book collects the first two volumes of Gravitation. Shuichi Shindou is the second-to-last student in his class at school. He spends all of his free time pursuing his love of music. He’s in a two person band with his best friend and guitarist Hiro. They play techno music, so much of Shuichi’s time is spent rearranging tracks on his computer. When Hiro warns Shuichi about working on their music in class, Shuichi loudly proclaims “I’m leading a revolution against Japan’s oppressive educational system! I’m fighting a war for art!”

Shuichi Shindou and Hiroshi Nakano are two high-school students dreaming of rock stardom. Unfortunately, their dreams, and their band Bad Luck, are going nowhere fast. Until Shuichi meets a mysterious—and verbally abusive—man late one night in the park who insults his lyrics and gives him a whole new reason to succeed. It turns out that this man is Yuki Eiri, the acclaimed romance novelist…and he and Shuichi find themselves undeniably attracted to each other. After Shuichi meets Yuki a second time, one thing leads to another, and next thing they know, same-sex love is in the air.

Seeing the cover brings back memories. These two were one of the first boy’s love couples I obsessed over with Shuichi’s wannabe a pop-star look, shirt falling off of him and microphone in hand. And Yuki, dear Yuki, with his smoky bedroom eyes, arm draped around Shuichi‘s shoulders. Once upon a time I loved this series, and the cover is a clear reminder as to why.

It doesn’t matter which version you read, because the story in both is the same. Shindou Shuichi is the class dunce, but he has one talent which gets his full dedication: techno music. While preparing a set for the school talent show, Shindou’s newly written lyrics are blown out of his hands into those of a mysterious stranger, Yuki Eiri, who tells him that his work is crap, empty, proof of having no talent. Shindou, taking everything in life too personally, begins a quest to find Yuki and make him pay. His obsession turns to a crush, which turns into love.
