Stories where schoolgirls are mysteriously conveyed to other lands aren’t exactly rare in the land of manga. I bet you can think of several without even trying. What sets From Far Away apart is two things: likable characters and storytelling skill.

There are a lot of clichés in From Far Away and you won’t see anything you haven’t read or seen before. It does offer a neat twist in that Noriko can’t speak the native language (finally, realistic manga about plunging into strange places!); however, that’s all that’s refreshing. None of the characters really stand out except for Noriko and that’s because she’s a very likeable character. She’s not stupid, she’s kind and considerate, a good observer and just an all-around good character. We aren’t introduced to many other characters in volume 1, but the ones that do appear are, well, dull.

This is young adult romance and fantasy/adventure, just what I would have wanted to read as a young teen. Had these books been available back in the ??’s, they’d have become instant favorites of mine, up there with The Three Musketeers. Reading them now I know that they’re an instant comfort read for me whenever I want to be swept away into a world that, while it contains evil, is also chock full of warmth.

As the fight between Izark and Keimos rages, Noriko must find a way to escape from her captors. Some unexpected help from an old enemy comes just in time. She hurries to Izark, determined to keep her promise to always be there for him. As the dark power gathers to force Izark’s transformation into the Sky Demon, Noriko arrives just in time. Izark throws off the chains that have bound him, and turns into…an angel?? I don’t know for sure, but it was freakin’ awesome!!!
