Monarchy ended long ago in Korea, but there are still other countries with Kings, Queens, princes and princesses. What if Korea had continued monarchism? What if all the beautiful palaces which are now only historical relics were actually filled with people? What if the glamorous royal family still maintained the palace customs? Welcome to a world where Korea still has the royal family living their lives! But for Che-Kyung, a high-school girl, this is a tragedy, since she has to marry the prince who turns out to be a total jerk!

While the premise initially seems far-fetched, the story is anchored by small moments of emotional sincerity. Chae-Kyung, as one might expect, is not thrilled with the idea of marrying a virtual stranger, let alone one who isn’t very friendly. She accuses her hardworking mother of selling her in exchange for a more comfortable existence, and is poised to refuse the engagement until she notices the worn state of her mother’s clothes as she urges her daughter to honestly tell the queen her true desires. She decides then to marry the prince for her family’s sake.

If Korea hadn’t been crushed by the countries around it, if their nobility was as wealthy and influential as that of China or England, what would modern day Korea be like? Changing history and sliding it into the real world, SoHee Park tells the tale of young prince Shin, who has been forced into an arranged marriage. He doesn’t seem to mind, but his bride to be, Chae-Kyung, has a thing or two to say about it!

Shin the man-beast is still at it, working his royal charms, if only to drive Chae Kyung crazy! The more something makes her happy, the more he wants to ruin it for her. He seems to have some kind of insane complex where if he can’t have something, he doesn’t want anyone else to have it, even if it’s something as simple as happiness. He’s still growing as a man, and being subjected to a girl like Chae is definitely changing the way he looks at things.

The strength of Goong continues to be the relationship between Shin and Chae-Kyung; their scenes together are riveting and Shin’s tentative steps toward more gentle treatment of Chae-Kyung are wonderful to see. Unfortunately, this means that the scenes in which they are separated are not as interesting in comparison, especially the more comedic parts, like some strange pages detailing the visiting Prince William’s friendship with the wizened palace eunuch. One notable exception is the wonderful moment in which we see Chae-Kyung’s parents, whose visit with their daughter has been cancelled by Yul’s mother, watching her on television and marveling at her new composure and confidence while simultaneously finding it somehow sad.

The fifth volume of the manhwa Goong finds crown prince Shin visiting the royal family of England. Left behind in Korea, Chae-Kyung grows more and more lonely--and ever more vulnerable to the schemes of the Yul's mother, the new daebi. Will new rounds of scandal bring the young royal couple closer together, or will they push them even further apart?

It’s really impossible to convey the awesomeness of Goong through a mere plot summary, because so much of the story is carried by the characters rather than the events. The night Shin and Chae-Kyung spend together is a fascinating example. When they’re first locked up together, Shin asks, “Are you scared? Do you think I’ll attack you?” Chae-Kyung, however, is more worried that she might attack him! Shin abruptly kills any mood that might’ve been brewing, though, when he says, “A man can sleep with a girl whom he doesn’t really like.” Readers can see that he’s developing feelings for her and just trying to protect himself by feigning detachment, but Chae-Kyung can’t. When he’s later moved by her eyes, which speak so honestly of her feelings for him, and tries to kiss her, she slaps him. Shin, of course, has no idea what he did wrong.

For me half the fun of a shoujo is watching the couple struggle to figure out their feelings and get together. Usually after the couple finally “gets together” half the fun of that series is taken away from me. But this series is unique in that the two get married first and then awkwardly understand one another. Shin and Chae-Kyeong are a really compelling couple and I anxiously await to see their fate. I think I’m all the more anxious just because of all the extra pressures and possible dangers to their relationship as a royal couple then there are to your typical high school love story. They have far more drama in their relationship then I would EVER want in mine, or wish in anyone else’s relationship for that matter.

Goong is a manga by Park So-hee, the series has been adapted to a korean drama starring Yoon Eun-hye. I like the drama and I started to read the manga because of it, but by far I think the manga is much better than the drama. Anyway, Chae-gyoung is the heroine of the series, she is your typical high-schooler; bubbly, cheerful, and simple. She lives an ordinary life until the day she is told that she is engaged to the Crown Prince of Korea; Shin. In the past, her grandfather apparently have an agreement with the late king to marry Chae-gyoung with the future crown prince.
