The name Ken Saito might be familiar to some as the creator of The Name of the Flower. I like that series a lot, so I’d been looking forward to Oh! My Brother ever since the license acquisition was announced. Unfortunately, I found it to be somewhat of a disappointment.

Hold on… you go through that huge, tragic setup just to create a story of two people sharing the same body?! Really?! What kind of contrived plot is that?! Have we not seen this done a million times before?! I wanted to hate Ken Saito’s Oh! My Brother on this premise alone, I really did. But with all of its charm and subtle comedy, I ended up loving this goofy – albeit flawed – shojo story.

While this manga isn’t as emotionally resonant and delicately constructed as The Name of the Father, it still manages to be entertaining. Masago is the younger sister of the incredibly popular and smart Shiro. He’s head of the school council and has a certain quality to his personality that seems to draw people towards him. He’s busy preparing for the school’s cultural festival. When he and Masago are about to walk home from school he sees a bus heading towards his sister and shields her with his body, dying instantly.

Masago was exhausted from arranging the school cultural festival in her brother’s memory, and Shiro took her exams for her. She got a perfect score and is now being singled out to run for student council. She has to deal with the usual complications including mean girl bullying and her feelings for Shiro’s best friend Kurouma and the watchful presence of Shiro’s rival Kuga. Where things start to get more interesting is the ways the brother and sister start reacting to their predicament. Masago gets angry as Shiro’s meddling and tells him to go away.
