Forced to enroll in school one month late after recovering from a serious illness, Harutaro is doing his best to remain optimistic about the entire situation. The other students are working hard to make Haru feel welcome - especially his chubby, loveable pal, Shota. However, Kai Majima, President of the Manga Club and all-around hard case, seems to be the one person intent on making Harutaro's school life a living nightmare.

While the framework of the story is a slice of life comedy, Flower of Life gives Yoshinaga, an artist who knows the world of comic fandom extremely well, an opportunity to vent about manga culture.

With Volume 2, Flower of Life kicks into high gear, as we see Yoshinaga really get into skewering manga stereotypes. The shy girl, the school play and the teacher / student crush plotlines are all here, but Yoshinaga gives them wickedly subversive twists that's pure comedy gold.

I don’t know how I overlooked this series for so long, and I feel sort of bad about it. Flower of Life is very fresh and entertaining, hosting a cast of fun and quirky characters. It’s not just the high school students who are confused about what path their lives should take; even some of the adults are struggling to be true to themselves. Most of the enjoyment is generated by the diverse personalities as they shift in and out of the spotlight in a merry-go-round of individual dilemmas.

This volume turned out to be bittersweet. I read it last night and to be honest, I was unhappy with how it wrapped out initially. As I thought about it the whole day today, I'm actually quite please with how it turned out.

It’s been a while (two years) since the previous installment, but I found that the characters came right back to me. Plus, there’s a handy catch-up listing to start. Harutaro and Shota are trying to make manga professionally, while Kai and his teacher lover are figuring out their relationship, left as the cliffhanger from book 3.

I came into Flower of Life expecting something new, something above and beyond what Yoshinaga had already accomplished in volumes 1-3. That was a mistake, I think. I had forgotten the genius of this comic is the fact that every situation, scene, panel, relationship, and emotion is something we can relate to.
