I’m enjoying the historical fiction aspects of the plot mixed with the fantasy elements. I think the scheming of the Borgias will make this an entertaining series.

You can’t go wrong with the Borgias—as long as you don’t have dinner with them. Ambitious, ruthless, and possessed of a family recipe for a subtle but deadly poison, the Borgia family of Renaissance Italy have fascinated writers for centuries. In Cantarella, artist and writer You Higuri takes a fresh view of this fabled family, bringing them to life with real emotions and a touch of the supernatural.

Boy oh boy, Cantarella has a little something for everyone: there’s historical drama set in early Renaissance Italy, corrupt Cardinals acting as puppetmasters inside the Vatican, political intrigue, a touch of the occult, and beautiful young men with dark pasts and tortured souls. All told within the framework of a coming-of-age story. All these elements are well blended and make Cantarella historical fiction at its best.

There are plenty of interesting threads within this story. First, there’s Cesare’s father who despises him. Often, he cannot even look at his son without being reminded of his sin. Second, there’s the love of his half-sister,Lucrezia, whose father is also the Cardinal. Lucrezia has feelings for her brother that go a bit beyond sisterly affection. Often Cesare has to pretend to be involved with someone else to make her see that he is off limits and uninterested.

Filled with interesting characters and non-stop political wrangling, Cantarella deftly tells the story of Cesare Borgia, a tortured soul longing for one thing – the love of his father. Confronted with the awful truth that his father, Cardinal Rodrigo, made a pact with the minions of Hell with his soul as the prize, Cesare makes a vain suicide attempt. By intervening, Chiaro paves the way for Cesare’s destructive path. Feeling sorry for the boy, Chiaro is determined to help Cesare overcome his inner demons, or kill him if he succumbs to them.

It's brother versus brother with a sister-in-law in the middle! As things quiet down from the recent war and the Pope uses his various children to solidify his power, a woman scorned heads right to the one place she knows she'll find a sympathetic ear. With the often humiliated Juan ready to take down Cesare once and for all, will Cesare finally give in to the dark forces surrounding him?

Now, while I’m glad Lucrezia is serving a purpose other than crying, I’m sad to see Chiaro separated from Cesare. Cesare isn’t really featured too prominently in this volume other than to get more creepy, but his creepy attendant Volpe is sent after Chiaro to whip the tar out of him.

Quite a bit happens here in volume nine of Cantarella. Having escaped from his torments, Chiaro roams injured through the woods seeking salvation while Lucrezia carries his child within her, but is told by her brother, Cesare, that Chiaro is dead. That’s only the tip of the iceberg in this event-filled volume.

Things don’t take as many climactic turns in volume ten of Cantarella as they did in volume nine but none the less the clock is still ticking for the lives of those trapped in Cesare’s ever-tightening web.

The repercussions of the last volume's actions play out here over these two trades, as Cesare starts to realize he's losing his battle against the demons inside him, no matter how hard he tries. His only salvation is Chiaro, who is saddled with responsibility for at least one death and cannot help him.
