"Suspense and the supernatural collide in the tale of Canon -- the only student to escape the bloody vampire attack that takes the lives of her fellow classmates. But she doesn't get very far before she is captured, bitten and turned into a vampire herself!

Struggling against the terrible needs that compel the undead, Canon commits herself to using her powers for good. She'll do whatever she can to avenge the death of her friends and her own unfortunate fate. Joining forces with Fuui -- a talking vampire crow -- she begins her quest to find Rodd, Lord of the Vampires. "

"Much as I like the character designs — so X/1999! — the butt-kicking heroine — so feisty and independent! — and the abundant eye candy — so many handsome vamps! — I have two reservations about Canon. First, Fuui is more of creaky plot device than a sidekick, interrupting moments of playful banter with large, undigested chunks of vampire lore. To some extent, such passages are unavoidable in a short series with a complicated mythology, but Shiomi doesn’t integrate them gracefully — too often, these conversations have the feeling of a classroom lecture... Second, Shiomi has no idea how to bring things to a satisfactory close. "

I think any fan of vampire fiction would really like "Canon". Even those who don’t normally like the genre — like me — may find themselves won over by the intriguing plot, despite all the violence and gore (of which there is plenty; why is this only rated “Teen”?) It’s just plain good, and I highly recommend it.
